Whether it’s a night of drinking, yelling at a loud event, a day of public speaking, or the winter is in full swing – you wake up one morning with a hoarse voice. If you have a sore throat, it may be a slight cold or an acute case of laryngitis.
Symptoms of Laryngitis:
- Weak voice or voice loss
- Tickle in the throat
- Dry throat
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx (voice box). It does not refer to infection, therefore laryngitis does not warrant medication. It is treatable by practicing at-home remedies, resting the voice, and being patient. However, if laryngitis symptoms last more than two weeks, make an appointment with a voice doctor.
Remedies For Acute Laryngitis
- Rest your voice
- Gargle warm salt water (1 tsp. salt to 1 c. water); add a little apple cider vinegar to make it even more powerful
- Use a humidifier in your home, especially at night, to add moisture to the air
- Suck on lozenges, preferably those with real ingredients such as soothing herbs and honey.
- Apple cider vinegar; combine 1-2 tbsp. of ACV, 1 tsp. honey, and a cup of water. Drink this one to two times a day.
- Warm tea with lemon and honey; herbal teas like chamomile, slippery elm, and licorice root.
- Add fresh ginger root to your tea and smoothies, and use it in your cooking.
- Drink lots of water.
Avoid using your voice a lot. Entirely avoid yelling, singing, and even whispering. Stay away from alcohol for the time being, until your symptoms improve. Do not use decongestants, as these dry out the throat and cause further irritation. Most importantly, do not smoke.
